the whole “ship hate is oppression, and if you ship a big ship, you’re an oppressor” thing is so frustrating. it makes it really difficult to talk about the homophobic and misogynistic tone a lot of the criticism against johnlock takes.
it isn’t wrong to dislike johnlock or to be disinterested in it. but in all honesty, tjlc is queer creativity at work. it’s queer people uplifting a queer reading on an internationally successful story and positing that the story is actually being written for us. if you go out of your way to impose negativity on queer enthusiasm for queer stories, you need to stop and ask yourself why it’s so important to you to take that away from us.
johnlockers might be the biggest group of shippers in the fandom, but a really significant number of us, especially tjlc folks, are part of multiple marginalized groups. many, many, many of us are queer, and our excitement about our ship is derived from the hope of seeing people like ourselves in media that speaks to us. claiming that we have some kind of meaningful social leverage because our ship isn’t a rare pair is just truly ridiculous.
